Tomorrow-Today: The International Date Line

Posted by Keith on May 10, 2007 at 10:05 pm | Leave a Comment

It’s all sort of confusing. Catch a morning flight from Majuro, The Marshall Islands, to Honolulu on, say, May 18, and you’ll arrive a few hours later in Honolulu on May 17. If you are then connecting to the mainland that same day, your connecting flight leaves the day before you left Majuro!

It’s all about the International Date Line, its exact opposite, the Prime Meridian, and “Zone Time.”

Fresh Wahoo Ceviche

Captain Wolf caught a small Wahoo today. It’s the perfect size for the four of us. At this moment I’m enjoying Alida’s outstanding Wahoo Ceviche. And tonight we’ll invite the rest of the fish to dinner!

Today we passed within 40 miles of Johnston Atoll. The Atoll hosts a U.S. military outpost involved in, among other things, disposing of WMDs. I’ve attached two brief articles to this blog: An article by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and an article by InfoPlease, an online information source. As these articles indicate, Johnston is an interesting place, but for many years to come it will remain strictly off limits to casual visitors.

About 308 Nautical Miles SW of Hawaii

Man, I love it out here!

We finally departed Honolulu two days ago, may 3, at 2:45 PM local time. In addition to our crew, a number of people made our departure possible.

Thank You Dennis Brunssen, Chris Crump, Steve Buckingham, John Baker, and Andy!

Honolulu, Hawaii — 8:00 PM Local Time

Tchaikovsky on the Bose. A gentle breeze. A spectacular sunset. Full moon rising. Small boats slip by. Evening cigar on the fly bridge. Laughter drifts from the Hawaii Yacht Club. Perfect temperature. Another day in paradise.

Crew, Cooks and Creative Technology

OK, so as John Baker, Chief Technician at our Phoenix radio station, KFYI, reminded me, being “stuck in Hawaii” is an oxymoron.

But, well, we are stuck in Hawaii for another 48 hours. However, we’re leaving Wednesday if I have to swim! (Did I already promise this when I wrote in an earlier blog that we’d leave today?)

Anyway, here is what’s happening:

Cool Info about the Ship and Stats on the First Leg

Not long ago, Bob wrote requesting various technical information about the performance and equipment aboard
The Global Adventure. I asked our intrepid First Mate, Rip Knot, to respond. In his thank you to Rip’s response, Bob disclosed that he is the proud owner of the first Nordhavn 86! Here is the exchange between Bob and Rip:

Life in the Slow Lane: Back at the Hawaii Yacht Club

Posted by Keith on April 24, 2007 at 4:13 pm | 2 Comments

As one of our website visitors, himself a boating enthusiast, said: “We don’t have a schedule, and we’re sticking to it!”

I’m back with The Global Adventure at the simply wonderful Hawaii Yacht Club at the Ali Wai Marina in downtown Honolulu. It’s breezy and beautiful, but yes we really are going to depart for Majuro. Weather permitting, we’re out of here Sunday right after our radio show.

“Close Your Eyes, Click Your Heels Twice, and Then Say…

Posted by Keith on April 19, 2007 at 8:10 am | 3 Comments

“…There’s no place like home. There’s no place like home.”

OK, so I didn’t click my heels twice, but I did catch a red eye Tuesday night/Wednesday morning back to Phoenix. And there really is no place like home! Arrived in Phoenix early yesterday morning, and proceeded to have a great “family day”.

What required 12 days at sea westbound, from San Diego to Honolulu, took six hours eastbound non-stop from Maui to Phoenix (had to fly from Honolulu first). But sitting even for just six hours in a metal tube, 35,000+ feet above it all, with 300 of my closest personal hacking-wheezing-coughing friends, is nowhere near as fun as going anywhere aboard or Nordhavn 55 –The Global Adventure.

Rip and Wolf are busily preparing the ship for departure from Honolulu this Sunday, or as close thereto as possible. Next stop: Majuro, The Marshall Islands.

I’ll meet today with our website gurus to divine ways to provide faster-better-easier content for you, our loyal website visitors, and will fly back to Honolulu tomorrow morning. Stay tuned…

–Keith
