Paradise on Palau
Posted by Keith on June 23, 2007 at 6:35 pm | 1 Comment
I own the early mornings here. The crew sleeps in. Captain Wolf will rise in an hour. It is quiet ashore. Only a rooster crowing somewhere behind Sam’s punctuates the morning stillness.
Nearby I see a few of the limestone cupcake-shaped Rock Islands, their bottoms just above the water, forming a perfectly horizontal lip, beneath which the tides have eaten away some of the stone, creating a pedestal on which each sits and above which a riot of mahogany, teak, and palm trees, and seemingly all things green crowd together to form a dense old-growth jungle canopy under which one could, with effort, climb or hike.

Seven Wonderful Days at Sea: Pohnpei to Palau
Posted by Keith on June 17, 2007 at 5:13 am | 3 Comments
It is with great pleasure that I share with you my log of the most pleasant seven days I’ve ever spent at sea. We are working diligently to download all four videos mentioned in the article. Connections from Palau are very slow, so please be patient!
Sunday, June 10, 2007
At 10:00 we hoisted our 5×8’ American flag up the rear halyard on our stack, and departed the dock at Kolonia Harbor, Pohnpei, bound for Palau, about 1450 NM away. A large container ship had just docked nearby and we powered past her in our beautiful Nordhavn. The ship’s Chinese crew waved, admired our boat, looked at our flag, and gave us the thumbs up.

Large and Small. Rich and poor. Abundant and scarce.
These adjectives all describe the 1800-mile archipelago of the Caroline Islands that run east-west along about the seventh parallel, known as Micronesia, or more formally as the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).

Hello, Goodbye Beautiful Pohnpei – and a Terrible Accident
Posted by Keith on June 9, 2007 at 1:41 am | 1 Comment
The drop-dead beauty of Pohnpei and its people, the island capital of Micronesia, has attracted mariners for centuries. It’s a place that absolutely positively makes sailing across the Pacific worthwhile.
The eco-tourism opportunities, deep sea diving, or fishing, and the friendliness of the people is supplemented by colorful places such as the Tattooed Irishman Bar at the thatched-hut Village Hotel, or the Rusty Anchor Lounge, frequented by ex—pats from around the globe.

Normal, U.S.A.

There is a village where normal is everywhere.
Families live in two and three story pitched-roof homes with gables and porches, some older than a century, and they work in town or in the nearby city which seems a thousand miles away and they mow their lawns and trim their flower beds in the spring and summer and buy or cut firewood in the fall and keep shovels and snow blowers ready for winter and in the summer the forests with their huge old trees hang over the roads and are a deep green and flowers of all colors are everywhere.

It’s Vacation Time, Baby!
Posted by Keith on May 23, 2007 at 5:21 pm | Leave a Comment
How do you take a vacation from a perpetual vacation?
You fly from Majuro, The Marshall Islands, swing through Phoenix to pick up your family and head to Chagrin Falls, Ohio, for a high school and family reunion.
I’ll be back on the ship — in Pohnpei, Micronesia — June 2 their time, June 1 stateside.
We’ll broadcast the radio show live from Chagrin Falls this Sunday!

The Real Majuro, The Marshall Islands
Posted by Keith on May 16, 2007 at 5:20 pm | 3 Comments
About Midway between Hawaii and Australia
Author’s Note: There is no sense pretending there are investment opportunities here. There aren’t. The Marshall Islands are poor, heavily dependent on U.S. support, and have little in the way of natural resources or land. So in the article below I elect to enjoy the place for what it is. I hope you will too.
Correction (May 19, 2007) Please note that previous references to the “Japanese fishing fleet” have been corrected to reflect the fact that the tuna fishing fleet in Majuro’s lagoon is owned and operated by Koo Fishing Company, of Taiwan.
